Now that kids in many Coral Gables real estate are finishing up Spring Break, they should be getting ready to return to school. Hollywood certainly doesn’t make the high school comedies like it did in the mid-80s when John Hughes and Brat-Pack personalities ruled the genre. On top of their catchy soundtracks, many of the classics are especially noteworthy thanks to their hilarious minor roles.

In 1984, Hughes emerged as one of the industry’s most prominent writer and director with the PG-rated Sixteen Candles. Preoccupied with her older sister’s approaching wedding, Molly Ringwald’s family forgets her 16th birthday. The poor girl must make it through her classes, the bus ride home, an embarrassing dinner with visiting grandparents, and a dance in the gymnasium. The script’s humorous peer pressure and puppy love make for an unforgettable birthday.

Sixteen Candles’ greatest asset is a Chinaman foreign exchange student named Long Duck Dong. In time, the “Donger” meets his own special woman. A young John Cusack also makes a notable appearance as a putz, while his sister Joan is always wearing a neck brace. Finally, Anthony Michael Hall stars as the freshman geek who experiences the night of his life with the Homecoming Queen. Don’t worry mothers in homes for sale in Coral Gables, Anthony Michael Hall puts his head-gear on before going to sleep in a Rolls-Royce.

15-year-old Gary and Wyatt share the same fantasy: They will find a girl and hit the city.  They’ll enjoy some drinks, a little nightlife and dancing. They’ll throw a huge party. I mean a HUGE party. Everybody’s invited. Women everywhere. Gary and Wyatt are hip and popular. They’re studs. It’s 1985, it’s PG-13, and it is a film every person with a Coral Gables home for sale should see: Weird Science.

Wyatt’s folks are out-of-town. Watching some horror movies on TV, Gary gets a pretty good idea of actually making a girl on Wyatt’s computer. She’ll be just like Frankenstein, except cuter. The two little maniacs can use it, put it into real life social situations and see how it reacts. The computerized woman is Lisa. She takes the fellas downtown for an intoxicating, bizarre, vivid and erotic evening. Wyatt gets to drive, even if he doesn’t even have his license yet. After all, Lisa could have a good time at an insurance seminar. The next night, the woman throws a party with chips, dips, and a couple of hundred kids acting like complete animals.

Then there’s Wyatt’s older brother, Chet, played by the recently passed Bill Paxton. Anybody with the Marine’s haircut like that, you know he’s going to have a foul personality. Lisa eventually turns Chet into a miniature Jabba the Hutt until he agrees to treat the boys with dignity and respect. A young Downey also appears as a popular kid who enjoys tormenting the two lead characters. By the end of their adventurous weekend, Gary and Wyatt gain popularity and attractive girlfriends in their race for power and glory. See, you don’t even need to leave your Coral Gables luxury home to be entertained for hours.
