It’s time for spring break in sunny Florida. For many Cape Coral real estate owners, it is time to travel with the family. Let’s take a look at some of the best travel movies ever made. Ever since Dorothy told Toto that she’s “got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” Hollywood films have loved taking family vacations around the world.  Whether you guys will pack up the “family truckster,” eat meatballs at overnight camp or board an overseas flight, the right DVD will prepare you for some of the funniest travel flicks.

When it comes to comedies, surely you can’t make a better choice than 1980’s PG Airplane!  Written, directed, and produced by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker, it was originally designed for a 20-minute sketch that just kept growing with various one-liners and gags. There’s an in-flight medical emergency caused by food poisoning.  Eventually, the passengers are rescued by a former military pilot who overcomes his new fear of flying. We eventually learn that the hero suffers from a messy “drinking problem.” Airplane! is full of references to Jaws, Casablanca, Saturday Night Fever, From Here to Eternity and Midnight Express. Of course, Airplane! lifts its major characters and plot from Zero Hour!  In fact, a number of the best-known lines from Airplane!’s script are repeated verbatim, like “Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.” Surely, they don’t make ‘em like they used to. “And will you stop calling me Shirley.”

People with homes for sale in Cape Coral also appreciate a 1983 classic. Writer John Hughes’ Griswolds win an extraordinary two-week extravaganza overseas in the PG-13 National Lampoon’s European Vacation. The whole crew from Chicago leaves the metallic pea-green station wagon behind to fly into London. With desperate driving skills, Clark circles around “Big Ben, Parliament,” knocks over Stonehenge, and visits Buckingham Palace where the Queen “queens and vacuums.” The family soon becomes self-appointed ambassadors of America while in Paris. The four soak in French culture with the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and sweet-talking waiters. Before long, they take the “Holiday Road” to Clark’s unknown relatives somewhere in Germany.  Before long, Clark gets into a fight onstage at a beer festival and they all flee to Rome. The Griswolds eventually walk into a robbery, go through a car chase and catch burglars all before returning home. Europe can certainly be quite a chaotic vacation.

1987’s Dirty Dancing is a warm-hearted romance, even if it is a tad unrealistic for many folks with Cape Coral homes for sale. Set in the 1950s, the PG-13 picture features Ferris Bueller’s sister, Jennifer Grey as the 17-year-old “Baby.” The innocent schoolgirl and her well-off family venture to a Catskills resort for the summer. “Baby” soon falls for a free-spirited dance instructor, Patrick Swayze, and it’s a clash of the stereotypical classes. Due to her folks’ disapproval, their illicit dancing must be kept secret. Even if her father disapproves of the relationship, “Baby” certainly has the time of her life on the dance floor.
