Top Secret is definitely the first flick about a guy who fell in love with a woman that he met at a restaurant who turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist only to lose her to her childhood lover whom she last saw on a deserted island who then turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French Underground. I know, it all sounds like some bad movie. But Naples real estate owners agree that it’s not.

The 1984 film by Airplane’s David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker stars Ice Man Val Kilmer in his premier feature film parodying World War II and Elvis pictures. It’s the story of Kilmer as an American pop singer, Nick Rivers who travels to East Germany to perform at a cultural festival. But the foreign land is still controlled by evil Nazis and under attack by the French Resistance. Rivers soon becomes involved in a movement and helps the beautiful Hillary rescue her father, a brilliant scientist being held by the Germans and forced to build the deadly Polaris Mine.

Memorable gags include Nick listening to a German teaching tape, learning phrases like “There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen” and “I want a Schnauzer with my Wiener schnitzel.” Of course, most of the “German language” heard is actually Yiddish.  Later, a soldier on the telephone declares, “Let me know if there’s a change in his condition, hangs up, and announces “He’s dead.” Hillary claims that she can help Nick as she knows “a little German” before pointing to a midget across the room. And flying humans are seen defecating on a statue of a pigeon before it drops one in turn. To sum it all up, Top Secret is a timeless classic in the comedy genre.

A decade later, Dumb and Dumber hit the big screen. Men and women in homes for sale in Naples agree that Jim Carrey has all the physical moves Jerry Lewis had in his prime, and not even Steve Martin as The Jerk is any stupider than Jeff Daniels in the 1994 modern classic. The two best friends stumble through any number of ridiculous mishaps and escapades rife with physical humor and one-liners. While most of the film is in poor taste, some of the dialogue is simply hilarious.

Dumb and Dumber’s story is lame, as it has too much of a Hollywood plot. After Carry’s character drives a beautiful but troubled young woman to the airport, he instantly falls in love with her. When he notices that she has left a briefcase on the terminal floor, he and his roommate find themselves on an adventure to return the item. They head to Aspen, Colorado. They don’t even know that it is random money in the suitcase, as it’s locked. Really well.

Overall, Daniels is the funnier of the two imbeciles. The feeble-minded, but the memorable protagonist is a departure from his usual straight-faced dramatic roles. But thanks to Carry’s actions of sewing a dead parakeet’s head back on, and vocalizing “the most annoying sound in the world,” Naples luxury homeowners usually agree that Dumb and Dumber is ingenious.
