If you are a Coral Gables real estate owner who appreciated classic rock, you will be excited to learn that the Who just announced a series of residency performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. While only six shows are scheduled from July 29 to August 11, more are expected in the near future.

Before flying out to Las Vegas, folks with homes for sale in Coral Gables can prepare for the experience by listening to the right albums. The Who Sell Out from 1967 is a concept album formatted as a collection of unrelated songs interspersed with mock commercials and public service announcements. The record was made to be a broadcast by a pirate radio station in London. The Who Sell Out is widely considered one of the greatest works of art in music history.

Tommy is the Who’s full-scale rock opera from 1969. It’s a concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizard. The CD is a complex set of pop-rock arrangements, generally based upon Pete Townshend’s acoustic guitar. It is built up with many overdubs by the four members of the band using many instruments, including bass, electric and acoustic guitars, piano, organ, drum kit, gong, trumpet, French horn, three-part vocal harmonies and occasional doubling on vocal solos. The Tommy play has been staged globally by a number of opera companies for four decades. The Who added an ambitious dimension to rock culture by a writing stage show about alienation, along with their creative recording techniques. Numerous men and women with Coral Gables homes for sale consider Tommy to be a timeless classic.

Of course, seeing the Who in Las Vegas may remind those from South Florida of the Who in concert. Roughly 10 years ago, the band’s two remaining members, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were joined by Ringo Starr’s Fab son, Zak Starkey, on the drums, while bassist Pino Palladino replaced the late John Entwistle. Reliving decades-old classics, the Who captivated South Florida for two hours.

Daltrey appeared with “Can’t Explain,” while two screens displayed the band, three smaller monitors show classic footage of the boys in the 1960s, along with psychedelic images throughout the night. He sang about Bob Dylan and the Beatles in “The Seeker,” and Townshend flaunted an unbelievable energy onstage.

Townshend discussed our state’s mosquitoes and alligators, and claimed, “These songs are about you as much as they are about us.” Recreations of “Who Are You” and “Behind Blue Eyes” were phenomenal. The undeniable highlight of the evening was “Baba O’Riley.” The crowd went nuts as lights strobed to Daltrey blowing a harmonica with tremendous speed and Townshend threw manic windmill arm strokes around his guitar. This is the man who refined the art of smashing guitars and speakers onstage, as commonly seen in the 1990s by Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Coral Gables luxury homeowners haven’t seen a middle-aged gentleman with Townshend’s energy since Mick Jagger. Concertgoers from Miami to West Palm Beach agree that they just don’t make them like they used to.
