It was the Summer of Love in June of 1967.  Held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in the small California town, the influential Pop Festival preceded Woodstock.  More than 200,000 people attended the concert for a $1 entrance fee, netting nearly $200,000.  In three days’ time, thirty-two acts performed including Simon and Garfunkel, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, the Mamas & The Papas, Buffalo Springfield without Neil Young, The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Simply pop in The Monterey Pop Festival DVD at your Delray Beach luxury home to see Otis Redding a few months prior to his untimely death.  Singing “Respect,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” and the amazing “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” his presentation is raw, projecting sexual overtones.  Redding’s racially mixed band helped melt down stereotypes in an era of segregation.  Following The Who’s live take of “My Generation,” the boys begin kicking their drums and breaking their instruments.  The musicians must be escorted out after their set, because such behavior was not deemed appropriate in the peace and love concert.

Folks with homes for sale in Delray Beach will love when the Jimi Hendrix segment begins with the Experience. In the background, a graffiti artist paints a photo of the legend on a wall.  Then a documentary describes him “knocking out the great blues.”  Spectators watch Jimi playing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” adding guitar screams and moans like only he could.  The entire album of the same name was created not to be reproduced live, but that wasn’t going to stop Hendrix.  There is even footage of all four Beatles and Mick Jagger checking out the phenomenon at a small club in London.

Introduced by the Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, Hendrix plays several of his timeless hits at Monterey, starting with “Killing Floor.”  Wearing a pink feather boa, orange ruffled top, black vest, red slacks and a psychedelic headband, the legend picks at his electric piece through his legs during “Foxy Lady.”  Jimi announces, “It’s really out of sight here,” and dedicates Dylan’s a version of “Like a Rolling Stone” with heavy feedback to “everyone.”  He plucks strings with his teeth during a version of B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby,” and swings his weapon behind his head during “The Wind Cries Mary.”

The film also entails an extremely short documentary on Hendrix, along with an interview with The Who’s Pete Townsend.  The massive event ran smoothly, as everyone was there simply for the music.  But some of the most important memories of the gig are no present, such as John Entwhistle of the Who revolutionizing the bass with a famous solo.  Instead, viewers see Townsend waiting for his mate’s jaw-dropping solo to end.  And another thing missing from the movie is the show’s aura, like Scorsese successfully captures on his Woodstock.  Unlike Monterey, the director’s exceptional camerawork is at its best.  The movie focuses on the talent and the camaraderie between the bands, as well as the audience members’ VW buses painted with flowers.  Thousands of Delray Beach real estate owners agree that Woodstock wouldn’t have even existed without the trend-setting Monterey Pop Festival.
