Today’s most prominent directors are storytellers that teach the world’s children, and just about every Aventura real estate owner is confident that Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential artists ever.

Based on author Peter Benchley’s horrifying No. 1 best seller, 1975’s Jaws portrays Amity, an island resort in New England that encounters the perfect eating machine. The police chief, played by Roy Schneider, concludes that the city’s visitors are being assaulted by a great white. However, the mayor insists on covering up the deadly menace in order to save tourist money within the community. After enough run-ins, the town hires a shark hunter, Robert Shaw, along with a young Richard Dreyfuss, to find and kill the beast. Spielberg’s young genius behind the camera was apparent as the audience does not see the man-eating fish until half-way through the film. Rather, the spectator sees the beast’s point-of-view.

Six years later, the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, teamed up with Jaws’ director to bring the ultimate escapade to the screen, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spielberg sat on the script for years waiting to find the ideal actor for his film. Upon seeing the premiere of The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo would play Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones. Harrison Ford is the brave archeologist, as well as a professor at the University of Chicago. Indy is hired by the US government to beat the Nazis at locating the Ark of the Covenant, believed to still hold the Ten Commandments, found in an Egyptian excavation site. From being chased by a rolling boulder through a dark cave in the opening sequence and confronting snakes with his ex-girlfriend, to opening the mystical Ark, Raiders is unquestionably one of the greatest adventures of all time.

In 1982, Jaws’ large-scale reign was invaded by an alien who was attempting to return home. For the next ten years, Spielberg’s E.T. sat as the planet’s top grossing movie. Regardless of his extraordinary high profits, the director was consistently condemned for shameless sentimentality and making lighthearted entertainment.

The negative criticism finally changed a decade later after Spielberg directed a political and timeless account of World War II. In 1993, Spielberg educated the world with Schindler’s List, the frightening epic of one man’s unforgettable testament to the possibility of human goodness from within the Holocaust. The true-to-life film depicts Oscar Schindler, who single-handedly helped to save one thousand Jews from a Concentration Camp in Auschwitz. The instant-classic won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The same year, Spielberg’s computer-enhanced Jurassic Park knocked E.T. out of the worldwide box-office record seat, earning almost one billion dollars to date.

In 1998, Spielberg won the much-deserved Best Director Oscar for Saving Private Ryan. He brutally and realistically portrays WWII’s historic D-Day, the Allied invasion of Normandy, followed by a mission to find Private James Ryan, played by Matt Damon, and send him home after all three of his brothers were killed in the line of duty. Life is no box of chocolates for Tom Hanks and his platoon sent out to save the young private.
