Staying Safe When Using Electricity Around Orlando Luxury Homes

Appliances, electronics, power tools, blow dryers, smartphones, and lamps all have something in common. They all need power to run. Most often than not that power is generated by electricity. As homeowners of Orlando luxury homes, we expect all of these items and hundreds of others to work by simply plugging them into a wall socket or electrical strip. That’s the beauty and power of our world today.

However, it is important for those living in Orlando luxury homes to remember that behind that power is a system that can turn beautiful Orlando real estate into a heap of ashes if it is not cared for appropriately.

Using Electricity Safely in Orlando Luxury Homes

Florida Power and Light recommends anyone living in Orlando luxury homes or other real estate property check the following five areas to ensure it is electrically safe.

Electrical Outlets

We are dependent on our electrical outlets because so much of our daily lives use some item that requires an electrical outlet to work. From our smartphones to lamps, most homes have multiple items plugged into electrical outlets at all times. This can turn into an issue if a home doesn’t have enough outlets in busy areas.

One common source of accidental fires in a home is an overloaded electrical outlet. This can happen when a multi-outlet power strip is plugged into another power strip and then plugged into a wall outlet. Known as piggybacking, this type of situation is a real hazard in any home.

Fire prevention officials recommend only one power strip be plugged into any to-entry electrical outlet, and never piggyback strips or an excess amount of extension cords.

Also, check outlets for loose-fitting plugs and broken wall plates. If there are small children in the home, parents need to make sure safety covers are placed on all unused outlets.

Plugs

Check plugs to make sure that they fit properly and securely. Never force a plug into an outlet. Verify that the right plug is being used. The third prong or ground pin should never be removed from a plug. Instead, use a two-prong adapter.

Cords

Cords are a great way to bring the power of an outlet where it may be needed most. Electrical cords transmit electricity through an insulated line and should never be nailed or stapled because it compromises the cord’s safety. Replace any that are cracked or frayed, and never place furniture on top of them.

Light Bulbs

Lamps and other light fixtures recommend a particular wattage for proper functioning and homeowners should never use a higher wattage bulb to increase the brightness of an area. This can turn into a fire hazard. Check bulbs and replace any that are of a higher wattage than what is recommended with the correct wattage. Also make sure bulbs are screwed in securely.

Computer and Entertainment Equipment

This is an area that can suffer from piggybacking. Outlets in a room where computer and entertainment equipment need to not be overloaded. Be sure that the equipment is in good condition and working properly. Look at plugs, connectors cords, and wiring for cracks or damage and replace them.
