If you are dreaming of moving to another home, you are part of the nearly 10 percent of U.S. residents who want to leave their current living situation and move somewhere else. This is the latest from the U.S. Census Bureau which reports that although Americans may be dissatisfied with their living situation, they often stay.

Only 18.3 percent of the 11.2 million householders who wanted to move actually did so this decade. Factors that can affect whether a family can move is not only cost, but time, health and finding a suitable home in their desired location all play into the whether or not someone can move into their choice of Boca Raton luxury homes, Coral Springs homes for sale, or another town or location.

Individuals Wanting to Move

Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate those who want to move are:

  • Renters: Of the individuals who are renting, 16.5 % indicated that they would love to move. This is more than double the rate for people who owned their own homes.
  • Young Home Dwellers: For individuals between the ages of 16 to 34, approximately 14.6 % reported wanting to move from their current household. The numbers drop from there with 10.4 % of individuals between the ages 35 to 54 indicating a desire to move, and only 6.3 % of individuals aged 55 and older reporting they’d like to live somewhere else.
  • Households with children:  14.3 % of households with children reported wanting to move to a different location. In comparison, only 8.7 % of homes that didn’t have any children reported wanting to move.
  • Impoverished Homes: Of all the homeowners who wanted to move to another home or location, approximately 13.7 % were considered part of the average census tract (neighborhood) poverty rate.
  • Disabled Households: Homes that had an individual with a disability reported wanting to move 12.5 %. This is compared to 8.2 % of households reporting a desire to move but did not house a disabled individual.

The top reasons for wanting to leave current housing conditions include:

  • Housing Conditions: The most cited reason for wanting to move from a current location was dissatisfaction with housing conditions. Approximately 6.1 % respondents reported this as a primary reason for wanting to relocate.
  • Neighborhood Issues: The next reason that most people reported as the primary cause for wanting to leave their current housing situation was because of dissatisfaction with their neighborhood. A total of 4.7 % of people cited this issue.
  • Safety: Local safety was reported by 4.1 % of people in the survey who reportedly wanted to leave because of security reasons.
  • Public Services: Dissatisfaction with public services in the area gave 1.8 % of the individuals participating in this report a reason to want to leave their current housing situation.
