A large percentage of Windermere real estate owners grew up in the Eighties, enjoying timeless comedies that never seem to get old. Perhaps the most underrated feature is 1985’s Better Off Dead. The PG selection stars John Cusack as a high schooler in Northern California. He is completely miserable after getting dumped for the captain of the school’s ski team, Roy. After all, he’s “more popular, better looking and drives a nicer car.” He can’t take life without her and decides he’s better off committing suicide than going on without the superficial snob. That’s when a French foreign exchange student moves in and sweeps him off his feet. As far as Better Off Dead’s phenomenal supporting actors, Revenge of the Nerds’ Booger is Cusack’s best buddy. Then there’s Ricky. He is the overweight, horrible dresser who snorts nasal spray on a regular basis, eats Jell-O through a straw and tears up a dance floor. But its best feature is the persistent paperboy, Johnny, who haunts Lane for the cash he owes. By the end of Better Off Dead, Lane lives happily ever after. That’s if the $2 dollar-seeking paperboy doesn’t get them first.

In what most people with homes for sale in Windermere think is his greatest work, Matthew Broderick is the charismatic star of 1986’s PG-13 Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The role model of a generation and his buddy spring his girlfriend from class to embark on a day of adventure in downtown. There’s nothing Ferris can’t handle. Cruising in a breath-taking 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, the trio visits Sears Tower, the Art Institute, the Board of Trade and a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. The Lennon-quoting Ferris even boards a parade float to lip-sync “Twist and Shout.” It’s quite a “sick day.” Watch for Charlie Sheen as the juvenile delinquent with bloodshot eyes in a police station. There’s also Louie Anderson as a flower deliveryman who accompanies a singing nurse to the kid’s home. Some parts may be childish and immature.

There’s a handful of other features that don’t quite live up to the four previously described. For example, a young Sean Penn immortalized the R-rated Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982 with his portrayal of burnt-out surfer Jeff Spicoli many years before he became an Oscar winner. Before Val Kilmer became a Top Gun in the industry, he was a genius full of hysterical one-liners in 1984’s PG-rated Real Genius. Hughes returned in 1985 with the dramatic R-rated setting of The Breakfast Club. The diverse crew of Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy join Ringwald and Hall in a memorable Saturday detention.  The following year, Hughes wrote and produced the PG-13 Pretty in Pink. This time, Ringwald is an underprivileged soul who gets a crush on Andrew McCarthy, a wealthy prep. Jon Cryer plays Duckie, her best friend who is hesitant for the girl to pass the social boundary. Men and women with Windermere luxury homes only wish that today’s flicks were as much fun as the Eighties’ timeless comedies.
