Florida’s Hidden Home Problem: Mold!

Weston luxury homes

Mold growth in your home shouldn’t be taken lightly. Weston luxury homes and other real estate properties in South Florida can easily fall victim to mold. The humid conditions in the state of Florida are ideal for mold growth.

Mold is not only a health hazard it also can cause substantial property damage.

Health Issues

The most common health effects of mold are often seen in people, like Weston luxury home owners and their families, as an allergic reaction. These health reactions may occur immediately as mold starts to grow or it can take a period of time for a reaction to appear in people. With continual exposure, allergic reactions may happen due to both mold that is growing along with its mold spores.

Signs of mold allergy may be evidenced in the following symptoms:

  • coughing,
  • runny nose,
  • wheezing,
  • sneezing,
  • itchy eyes,
  • redness of the eyes,
  • watery eyes,
  • skin irritation or rash.

Asthmatics in Weston luxury homes or another home that has mold growing may find themselves having frequent asthma attacks. This may be happening because of the mold spores or mold itself.

Even individuals who are not normally susceptible to allergies or allergic reactions may find mold in a home irritates their skin, airways, and eyes.

Home Damage due to Mold

Mold and mold spores develop when there is moisture. If there no moisture present, then mold will not grow.

If mold is found in a home and it is not remedied, than you can rest assured that the property will be damage or destroyed in time. This mean homes, even Weston luxury homes, may suffer structural damage if the source of the mold problem is not addressed.

Identifying Mold in Your Home

Symptoms from family members may be your first clue that mold may be growing in your home. To see if you’ve got mold growing in your home, you should look for white to greenish or black spotty appearance in areas where water may be present. That is places where plumbing is present or parts of your home facing the outside elements, such as doors or window sills.

As you search, you also should notice if you smell a damp, musty odor. That may be an indication that mold may be growing nearby.

Testing Kit

If you’re unsuccessful in finding mold, but want to be sure there is none present in your home, you can use a do it yourself kit. Testing kits can be purchased in most home improvement stores and will let you do some additional investigating.

A DIY testing kit will detect mold spores accumulating in household dust even if you cannot see or smell any signs of mold.

Cleaning Mold

You may be able to clean and remove the mold yourself depending on the degree and type of mold you discover. With a soft brush dipped in 1 quart water and 1/2 cup bleach, scrub until the signs of mold disappear. Let the area dry out completely, in direct sunlight if at all possible, before closing up the job.

Professional assistance may be need if the growth is extensive or if you aren’t sure you located any or all of the mold. Trained professionals should be able to remove and prevent further spread of the mold contamination.
