Boca Raton real estate owners who appreciate grassroots performed live will certainly get a kick out of Donna the Buffalo performing on Wednesday, January 3rd at The Funky Biscuit.  In the last two decades, Donna the Buffalo has sold well over 100,000 records while performing over one hundred gigs a year.  One of the Buffalo’s biggest crowd was the 2004 Grassroots Festival, featuring more than 15,000 spectators.  The eclectic crew out of upstate New York simply plays what feels right.  They find joy in doing whatever it is that comes across naturally.  The members of Donna the Buffalo refuse to manipulate their lifestyles simply to play the industry’s games.   Rather than cash, they measure success by bonding with audiences around the nation.

The sound produced by Donna the Buffalo resembles a smorgasbord of reggae, rock, country, Cajun, and folk.  When it all comes together with a fiddle, their accessible music represents the soundtrack of good ol’ American dance.  “It’s simple, straightforward, melody-oriented and easy to take in,” posted guitarist and vocalist Tara Nevins on the band’s website.

Not unlike the followers of the Grateful Dead and Phish, their fans have grown into groupies and are now known as “The Herd.”  And Donna the Buffalo has always believed in giving back to the people who listen to their music. That is one of the reasons they founded their own Grassroots Festival.  The massive festival has morphed into a giant event that has included big names, such as 10,000 Maniacs, John Anderson, Patty Loveless, Los Lobos and Ralph Stanley on the bill.  The shows have also brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities.  “That was a really special moment because we had never played any of this kind of music in front of anybody and we had no idea how anyone would react,” said guitarist and co-founder Jeb Puryear.  “People danced and it was a joyous thing.”

Many folks with homes for sale in Boca Raton think Donna the Buffalo’s best album is 2005’s Life’s a Ride. They claim it is so special because it explores new ground, such as a Native American Flute on “Love and Gasoline,” guest musicians, and a kora player on the upbeat “Blue Sky.”  “My, my, my, everybody gets high on Love, Love, Love,” is expressed in the chorus.  At the same time, “Deeds of a Few” entails a political frame of mind.  2007 is the time for the Buffalo’s Dead-Head-like groupies, dubbed “the Herd” to take advantage of intimate venues, such as the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton.

“All that was an attempt to make the best record we could by having a little more time to track it,” explained Puryear. “The way the recording industry is now, with everyone copying your stuff, it’s hard to get a large budget.”

Whether they are experienced in the event or first-timers, there is no doubt that hundreds of men, women, and children from Boca Raton luxury homes will have a blast experiencing Donna the Buffalo at The Funky Biscuit.
