Is Chapter 27 in your Weston real estate’s library? It is a modern classic. However, there is plenty of controversy surrounding the book by J. D. Salinger. It reflects themes of anger and alienation from a teenage boy. Considered a modern classic, the story grows complex, as the young man struggles to find his own identity.

There are 26 chapters in The Catcher in the Rye, the inspirational book Mark David Chapman was carrying immediately after shooting John Lennon. Peace Arch Entertainment is a Canadian-based company that released Chapter 27, a dramatic depiction of the killer’s days leading up to the Beatle’s infamous shooting on December 8th, 1980. The independent release is intended to be an exploration of the shooter’s psyche, without emphasizing John’s actual death in front of the Dakota apartment complex where Yoko still lives.

Written and directed by Jarrett Schaeffer, his first film was released in March of 2007 after much controversy. Jared Leto, also seen as the heroin addict in the Hollywood film Requiem for a Dream, gained 67 pounds for the role of the murderer in New York City. Chapman is presently serving a prison sentence of 20 years to life. In fact, he was recently denied parole. Lindsay Lohan stars as Jude, a friend of the convict and a devoted Beatles follower. The actress met with John’s widow, Yoko One, several times to discuss the part, as she controls both the rights to the man’s music and movie rights to the registered trademark known as “John Lennon.” Both Leto and Lohan received death threats for their parts in Chapter 27, presumably from giant Beatles fans who resist to the notion of glorifying the murderer on film.

While some critics viewed Chapter 27 as an opportunity to further educate the world on the beloved rock star, thousands have boycotted the picture. Protestors claim that the exposure is exactly what the villain was seeking by his brutal actions and desecrates the memory of John. Web sites were created for fans to share their feelings on Chapter 27.

Ideas expressed repeatedly online include giving the rights of the screenplay to a master of depicting real life scenarios, such as brilliant director Martin Scorsese, as well as Oliver Stone. While moviegoers in homes for sale in Weston are certain that the acting, the editing, and the soundtrack would be phenomenal, the independent-minded directors of superstar stature would never collaborate with someone like Yoko Ono, as she would demand final control of the picture. When the woman does grant permission for a production replicating her deceased husband’s life, it is to less-known artists who she can bark orders at. Such was the case in 2005 with Don Scardino, writer, and director of the short-lived Broadway musical Lennon.

Rather than popping in the Chapter 27 DVD at your Weston luxury home, you would be better off watching something more entertaining, like the Fab Four’s extremely well-received Anthology, a lengthy documentary video of the Beatles.  The financial success of the Beatles’ Anthology made Paul the single wealthiest individual in the U.K., and for good reason.
