There can be nothing better than arriving back to your Parkland real estate and putting on just the right piece of vinyl. The right record can send you on a voyage of time and space. The right Led Zeppelin record puts you back in that heavy relationship from high school, while a Beatles singalong allows you to relive your youthful summer days at camp. That is the power of timeless music. Let’s take a look at some homeowners’ favorite records.

Jill Simons is a 42-year-old nurse who recently purchased a sizeable home for sale in Parkland. The woman is rather excited to see Hot Tuna who will be heading to South Florida soon. While Jill has seen the jam band plenty of times in the last three decades, it will be a new experience for her husband, Ray. To get Ray ready for the show, she has been playing First Pull Up, Then Pull Down, Hot Tuna’s live record from a gig in California during the spring of 1971. As Jill explains to her man, that’s when the band went electric and added a funky violinist to the line-up. Quality cuts include “John’s Other,” “Never Happen No More” and “Been So Long.”

While Hot Tuna’s music is rather unfamiliar to Ray, he does know quite a bit about mainstream recording artists, such as the late David Bowie. His favorite song is “Day-In Day-Out,” a classic single on Bowie’s Never Let Me Down that was issued as a single ahead of the album’s release. Ray loves how the cut criticizes the urban decay and deprivation in American cities, concerned largely with a young mother who must shoplift and become a prostitute to feed her child. “Day-In Day-Out” peaked at #17 in the UK charts.

Jill and Ray’s neighbor, Dave Blackman is recently divorced professor. Needless to say, he spends plenty of time in his home listening to music. For example, last night the man played Donovan’s Greatest Hits a bit loud. Singer-songwriter Donovan put out the album in 1969. The LP was a major success, reaching #4 in the US, as it collects three singles that were previously unreleased on any album, “Epistle to Dippy,” “There Is a Mountain” and “Laleña,” along with re-recordings of “Catch the Wind” and “Colours.”

Regardless, Dave’s favorite LP has to be Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s Head On. The group’s 1975 release features a particular form of electronically amplified tunes. The most familiar cuts include “Looking out for #1” and “Find Out About Love.” Then there is Jackson Browne’s Hold Out from 1980. Dave claims it’s the artist’s only album to date to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. It’s most popular number, “Of Missing Persons” was written for Inara George, the daughter of Lowell George, a songwriting collaborator who died a year prior to the release.

Most recently, Dave has been heard blasting Jefferson Airplane’s Thirty Seconds Over Winterland throughout his Parkland luxury home. The live album from 1973 features “Have You Seen the Saucers,” an eleven minute “Feel So Good” and three different takes on “Long John Silver.” At just under forty minutes, it successfully captures the essence of the American band’s gigs in Chicago and San Francisco.
