Homeowners Treat Themselves to an Eighties’ Treasure

As thousands of Aventura real estate owners remember, “Hot For Teacher” is a song on Van Halen’s successful 1984 album. The suggestive cut was made immortal from its hysterical music video. The MTV classic features the four band members as both adults and as grade school students experiencing their teachers put on a beauty contest with stripping and pole-dancing. Naturally, education committees across the States protested the song and its vivid video.

The five-and-a-half-minute video starts with black and white footage of a mother fixing the part in her nerdy son’s hair. “Sweet, sweet Waldo,” she says. “I hope you can find some friends this year.” SNL’s late but great Phil Hartman performs the voice of Waldo, replying “Ah, mom, you know I’m like other guys.” The school bus driven by David Lee Roth then picks the boy up and the fabulous “Hot For Teacher” guitar intro begins the fun.  All of Waldo’s peers taunt the poor child for his appearance. The nerd sweats profusely, as seen through a variety of alternative camera angles. Next thing you know, the screen turns to color as the teacher enters her classroom on a walkway. Strutting in only a bathing suit and high heels, the instructor’s ribbon reads “Phys Ed.” Eddie then walks down a long stretch of tables lined up in the library during just another one of the number’s mean solos.

The immortal lyrics soon announce, “Class dismissed,” and the students all come pouring out of the building. The clip’s main four kids hop into a yellow hot rod driven by Diamond Dave himself and drive off into the future. We then get to see each of the pupils years later in their careers. Drummer Alex Van Halen went on to become Dr. Van Halen, Gynecologist in Los Angeles. Bass player Michael Anthony is currently a champion sumo wrestler in Tokyo. Eddie is temporarily “relaxing” in a Bellevue Mental Ward straitjacket, but making progress. Roth went on to Hollywood to become America’s favorite game show host. And no one’s sure what happened to Waldo after graduation. But the video does portray him pimped out with a fur coat, a luxurious convertible and three of the runway’s beauty queens.

The “Hot For Teacher” video was also one of the many hints that Roth aspired to be a mass media personality, maybe even a game show host. Music fans with homes for sale in Aventura can blame the success of this video for his solo stint’s “California Girls” and “Just A Gigolo,” followed by a short-haired talk show host on television many years later.

The song’s intro and solo are two of the finest works Eddie has ever recorded. “Hot For Teacher” is featured in the film Varsity Blues during a striptease, and Family Guy’s Nate Griffin goes into the African jungle to find a log and stick so he can play the beginning of the song. Ween also covers the song in their live setlists.

Classic rock fans in Aventura luxury homes can now treat their eyes and ears to “Hot For Teacher” video on YouTube. Homework was never quite like this.
