If you are one of the thousands of Venice real estate owners who appreciated the Fab Four, you may want to have some of the best Ringo Starr media in your home, including the Ringo Tour 2003 DVD.

Fronting his eighth All-Starr Band since 1989, a cheerful Ringo performs sixteen numbers at Toronto’s Casino Rama. The line-up includes keyboard master Paul Carrack, guitarist Colin Hay, percussionist Sheila E., sax man Mark Rivera, and bass player John Waite in support of the 2003 release, Ringorama. Hits played at the show include Mike & The Mechanics’ elegant “Living Years,” Men at Work’s radio-friendly “Down Under” and Sheila E.’s funk-pop “Glamorous Life.”

Wearing a black satin button-down over a black T and blue jeans, Ringo appears tired when he performs “Honey Don’t,” “Boys,” and “Yellow Submarine.” He certainly does not have a million-dollar voice. The gang assists the Fab drummer in singing “With a Little Help from My Friends” and viewers get to watch a voluptuous Sheila E. grinding on the floor with a bass.

The disc also features an unscripted up-close-and-personal backstage footage of Ringo introducing the event crew. The short documentary portrays the band with pre-show jitters, getting off their private jet and the former Beatle continuously joking with the cameraman. Dozens of still photos of the band jamming, as well as hanging out are displayed in the Tour Gallery. There is an All-Starr discography that begins with 1970’s Sentimental Journey. Biographies on every band member display about seven paragraphs on each musician’s career. Most folks with homes for sale in Venice think neither the performance nor the bonus features are entertaining or interesting. In other words, the Ringo Tour 2003 DVD is a disappointment.

Then there’s Ringo’s 2004 CD, Tour 2003. For the most part, consumers spend their dough on Ringo’s band mates, rather than the famous musician from Liverpool. It’s always fun to hear any versions of Beatles tunes led by Ringo, such as “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Don’t Pass Me By.” Onstage, the band also performed a memorable tribute to George, an acoustic version of “Here Comes the Sun,” but it’s missing from the album. The material sung by the talented Shelia E. is the highlight of Tour 2003, as the diva steals the show. Colin Hay of the 1980s’ Men at Work sings a couple of tunes, including an exciting version of “Who Can It Be Now.” Similarly, Paul Carrack executes an unimpressive “Living Years.” Though some of the singles are amusing, Tour 2003 is uninspiring, as the record lacks the thrilling power of the All-Starr Band’s concert performances.

Ringo reappeared in 1989 with the first line-up of the All-Starr Band. Featuring Joe Walsh, Billy Preston, and other big-name celebrities of the industry, the band hit the road, selling out a series of venues in the United States. Plugs on Good Morning America and The David Letterman Show are touched on, along with the aging pop singer’s guest voice appearances in Hollywood, as well as on an episode of The Simpsons in the 90s.
