Oviedo Real Estate Relfects Florida’s Top Spot in Population Growth

It has always been a curiosity why anyone would choose to live through bitterly cold winters year and year. If recent census numbers are any indication, people are finally deciding to leave their northern habitats and move to warmer areas of the nation where jobs and more affordable homes are listed.

Florida topped the list of states with the fastest growing population between July 2014 and July 2015. Outpacing California for the first time in almost a decade in the number of new residents choosing to relocate, Florida is now the third most populous state in the country.

Areas like Central Florida are seeing an influx of residents hunting homes for sale in Oviedo, Winter Park, Kissimmee, and Orlando. With affordable housing in the area and the job market on the upswing, it is no wonder that Snow Belt residents are choosing to leave congested cities and long winters. The U.S. Census finds Florida jumping ahead of New York in the population.

The latest number from the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates find California still maintaining the number one spot with 39.14 million, followed by Texas with 27.47 million, then Florida with 20.27 million, and New York rounding out the top four with 19.80 million residents.

West Migration Veers South

More than 1.4 million individuals have chosen to leave the Midwest and Northeast and move to the Sun Belt since 2014, reports the Census Bureau. What is noticeably different is that the migration has begun to shift more to the south, like Florida and Texas, instead of the previous century’s state of choice – California.

Population experts find that the rising housing costs, land-use restriction laws, taxes, and stagnant job creation are luring residents away from California and other western locations to southern states where the cost of living is more reasonable and business-friendly, such as Florida.

Florida is the Place to Be

Between 2014 and 2015, Florida added more residents than any other state with the exception of Texas. Topping 20 million over the last year, Florida’s new residents were primarily from a mass migration out of other states.

The U.S. Census Bureau reported a net migration of 202,510 people moving from other U.S. states to Florida. The number of people moving from other countries to Florida was estimated to be around 129,525 people. Although the state had 220,628 births added to the population, it was offset by the number of deaths reported, which came in at 190,735. The remaining 3,775 people were likely state hoppers moving into Florida, although the Census Bureau did not have records to place into specific categories.

With gains in all categories, Florida is hitting it hard in all areas. Predictions expect to see this migration continue and the real estate market will gladly help new residents find the housing they need.
