Melbourne / Space Coast real estate owners certainly appreciate their ridiculous comedies from the 1980s, such as Police Squad!: The Complete Series and This Is Spinal Tap. They are so stupid, you can’t help yourself from laughing out loud.

Six years before The Naked Gun was brought to the screen, Police Squad!: The Complete Series was released for one season in 1982. Two years after Airplane! crashed into theatres, this original slapstick television series from the Zucker brothers is absolutely hysterical. Parodying the cop-shows from the 1960s and 70s, such as M Squad and The Streets of San Francisco, Leslie Nielsen stars as straight-faced Frank Drebin, while Alan North plays his befuddled captain.

Each of the 30-minutes programs is full of sight gags and one-liners. Every chapter contains the lab technician who is busy instructing kids through outrageous experiments and funny obstacles in the background, such as the Roman Coliseum and the Eiffel Tower. Neilson manages to knock over trash cans every time he arrives somewhere in his car and is sure to go off on tangents with ridiculous stories while taking official statements.

Special guest stars include William Shatner, Robert Goulet, Florence Henderson, Lorne Greene, and Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln. William Duell always appears as shoe shine know-it-all, “Johnny,” capable of answering literally any question for the right amount of cash. The man’s customers include cameos by Dr. Joyce Brothers, Tommy Lasorda, and he even offers Dick Clark the “secret formula youth cream.”

Viewers in homes for sale in Melbourne / Space Coast can now enjoy the Police Squad!: The Complete Series on DVD with two entertaining commentaries. One piece is the never-aired “celebrity guest death” of John Belushi, just prior to his passing. There is also a 10-minute Nielsen interview with the aging star explaining why Police Squad! failed: the dry humor works better in the theatre than on TV. And if you can’t imagine how the characters kept a straight face while filming the classic, just watch the brief gag reel of on-set bloopers. Besides an announcer saying tonight’s episode name that never matches up with words onscreen, and actors pretending to freeze in the concluding frame is the priceless highlight of the series.

The gag-laden satire was years ahead of its time with shameless stupidity. Perhaps that’s why only six installments of Police Squad! were aired before it was canceled. But the series spawned the successful Naked Gun trilogy. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.

Another silly comedy that stands as a favorite for Melbourne / Space Coast luxury homeowners is the cult classic, This Is Spinal Tap. Director Rob Reiner’s 1984 film set the bar for the mockumentary genre Reiner stars as a documentary maker, DeBergi, who accompanies the outrageous crew on a US tour. In the new movie, the director reprising his role and takes credit for coining the term “global warming.” Meanwhile, the rock stars discuss their history of charity work, including their campaigns to help ferrets in need. And on a scale from one to ten, this Spinal Tap film goes to eleven.
