Living on a nice piece of Kendall real estate, being a gardener can be fun. Of course, a person often has to worry about nasty weather, including hurricanes, tropical storms, and even tornados from time to time. Believe it or not, South Floridians now have to worry about droughts. But according to USA Today, the Sunshine State has the nation’s worst drought. Men and women have had to renovate their garden to make them more water efficient. Discover some of the best techniques to avoid these nasty draughts before they leave your garden dried up.

No, the severity of the droughts in South Florida is not nearly as bad as it is in Central Florida. However, there are still some precautions that should be taken before your garden looks like a desert. To begin, remove all your plants. The soil you are using doesn’t retain water well. In other words, you will have to water about twice as much as necessary in order for the liquid to absorb into the roots. If it stays the same after a week or two, you can fix it by loading the soil up with lots of compost. This not only prevents water from escaping, but it is also healthy for the roots of the plant.

The installation of a drip irrigation system is another move that can greatly reduce the amount of water needed in a garden. A marvelous bonus to the system is that water is constantly dripping into your plants, allowing every drop to be absorbed. If you still seem to need more water in your garden, you might consider which plants you could replace. Shrubs, such as Heavenly Bamboo, consume little water. When looking at homes for sale in Kendall, remember that these plants look beautiful in gardens as well.

Speaking of beautiful and lush gardens, look for penstemon varieties, including garnet, apple blossom, Moonbeam, and midnight. These flowers actually attract hummingbirds and butterflies. At the same time, your neighbors will be marveling over how you keep your flowers looking so good, despite living in a drought.

A popular drought resistant plant is the lavender plant. A large group of lavender plants looks fabulous in people’s gardens. At the same time, they hardly require any water to

flourish. Pineapple sage is another great option. Standing a little more than 2 feet tall, the shrub smells like pineapple. It’s another major attractor of hummingbirds. At the same time, the leaves add taste to drinks.

One of the best parts of living in South Florida is the fact that folks are so close to the Atlantic Ocean. Even if we are in a drought, we can still enjoy jumping in the water at the beach. Too bad Central Floridians don’t have that option.

Even if Florida is experiencing a drought and you are stuck with watering regulations, the right tricks to the trade can be the difference between a dying garden and a spectacular one, without wasting water in or outside your Kendall luxury home.
