Not every Meryl Streep film is a classic. Folks with Stuart luxury homes just need to take a look at 2006’s The Ant Bully. Targeted by the 10-year-old Lucas Nickle, the anthill is never safe. He vents his frustrations from constant ridicule by the neighborhood bully giving atomic wedgies. The ants refer to Lucas as “the destroyer” as he attacks their community in his front yard with a water gun without reason.

The barbarian is also known as “peanut” to his folks. When a magic potion shrinks the mindless boy to a few millimeters, he journeys into an unusual, unforgettable and educational world. The queen of the ants convicts the savage Lucas of “crimes against the colony,” and forced to live with the bugs as punishment. The human can only regain his freedom by changing his nature, making friends, learning their everyday routines, as well as lessons about compassion and selfless teamwork for any little critters.

Of course, the Queen ant is portrayed by Meryl Streep. People with Stuart beach waterfront homes for sale weren’t impressed with Nicholas Cage as the lead ant. He may be hard on the outside, but the craftsman is extremely soft on the inside. While Lucas’s folks are on vacation, he is being watched by his alien obsessed grandmother whose voice is provided by Lily Tomlin.  Julia Roberts, Regina King, and Bruce Campbell voice insects as well.

The climatic fight between the ants and the exterminator is quite exciting. The bugs team up with wasps to assist in their battle against the heartless human. The camera follows each insect’s descent into the battleground against the dangerous man. The film’s greatest asset is its state-of-the-art animation, filled with bright, vivid, and fantastical sights.

A simple puddle of water becomes a picturesque lake, while blades of grass are portrayed as skyscrapers. The color palette assists in giving animated life to these everyday objects that spectators regularly take for granted. Meanwhile, such amazing digital effects in the fast-paced action scenes, such as the tongue-throwing bullfrog chasing the ants, remind viewers of Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Independence Day.

To be blunt, The Ant Bully is lacking humor. The comical moments are too few and far between.  For example, it was humorous when the grandma’s dentures fell out the first time, but not the second, or third time. Also, all the star power that Streep provides doesn’t really add to the picture. One individual with a Stuart waterfront condo for sale thins comedians’ voices, rather than Oscar winners, would have been more appropriate.

In the mature spirit of Stanley Kubrick’s Clockwork Orange, classical Mozart is heard in the background while an exterminator is attempting to wipe out the population. Nothing is done to differentiate a majority of the characters. True, they look different, but barely and the animators ceased to give more than a couple of the insects’ individual personalities of their own. Even though the celebrity cast is meant for mature audiences, the childish animation makes up for it. The Ant Bully is an ideal DVD for any Stuart real estate owner.
