Imagine: John Lennon, The Special Edition is the essential documentary taken from the Beatle’s various home movies. The documentary highlights John’s antiwar activities, highlighted by a confrontation on a talk show hosted by conservative cartoonist Al Capp. Imagine is also filled with extensive interviews of Yoko, John’s two sons and his ex-wife Cynthia. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr interviews are all missing from the film, despite each one appearing from earlier interviews.

Reportedly, Yoko Ono had a plethora of home videos that she and John had shot of their life together, and she just turned it over to producers. Even if Ono had no approval or editing rights, John’s wife cooperated nonetheless with the making of Imagine.
The film concludes with John’s brutal assassination. The superbly-edited footage of John’s eyeglasses falling and shattering on cement in slow motion, with “A Day in The Life” playing, leaves a chilling effect in the hearts of spectators. Of course, the newsreel footage following John’s attack, followed by mourners from around the world weeping, is not easy for Beatles fans in Windermere luxury homes to digest either. Imagine paints a favorable picture of John, but it does not deny spectators his more prominent faults in the entertaining chronicle of one of rock’s greatest icons.
