Every two weeks or so, a friendly group of film buffs gets together on a member’s Weston real estate to see and discuss largely unsung movies. Many of the flicks are modern classics. Most recently, a few folks met in a beautiful home for sale in Weston to watch Into The Wild on DVD. The owner of the gorgeous Weston home for sale, Jim Mathews, opened the discussion.

Jim explained to a few other Weston real estate owners that in 1996, Jon Krakauer wrote a non-fiction account of Christopher McCandless’ epic journey. Sean Penn was touched by the man’s eccentric life and penned a screenplay to direct his fourth film.  Using the same title as the novel, Into the Wild stars Emile Hirsch as Christopher McCandless.

Sitting in a Weston luxury home, people watched the 24-year-old lead pass on attending Harvard for his Masters. Instead, the young man decides to get even with his father by leaving society behind. He renames himself Alexander Supertramp and sets out for Alaska. The Weston real estate owners watched the runaway make his way through memorable scenery and characters in South Dakota, California, and Mexico on his trek.

Jim was proud to read a quote off his smartphone to the other Weston real estate owners. “I saw this picture of the bus on the cover of this book called ‘Into the Wild,’” Sean Penn explained to CBS News. “And there was something about it that drew me to it. The mother, Billie, called me and said she had a dream,” the director continued.  “Chris had said, ‘Don’t make a movie about me. I told her if I didn’t respect dreams, I wouldn’t make movies. And so ten years went by. And I got a call out of the blue saying, ‘We’re ready to see a movie made.’” Several Weston real estate owners got the chills.

A Weston real estate owner named Chad Tucker pointed out the flick’s soundtrack was provided by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder. Chad continued detailing the plot. After high school, the undergraduate discovers that he and his sister are actually children of unwed parents. At the same time, Weston real estate owners are annoyed at his dad leading two lives with different partners and a couple sets of kids.

Penn’s character quotes Henry Thoreau’s Walden, a reflection on living the simple days in nature. He questions his own values, destroys his IDs, burns his cash and gives all of his savings to charity. Sure, his family looks for him desperately, but they are unsuccessful. Many Weston real estate owners wonder if they should’ve tried harder.

Throughout Supertramp’s voyage, he encounters numerous friends who try to help him. A Weston real estate owner joked that these guys certainly make for better dialogue than a loner chatting with a volleyball named Wilson.

The Weston real estate owners agree that the lengthy film does drag a bit, running over two hours long. And with its colorful cast of personalities, the movie certainly has more opportunities to improve. Perhaps the flick lacks Tom Hanks’ remarkable talent from a Weston real estate owner favorite, Cast Away.
