Weston real estate owners who appreciate horror fiction books and films will get a kick out of the first teaser poster for the next Stephen King-penned movie, It, out September 8th. Directed by Andres Muschietti, the movie stars Bill Skarsgard and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard. Looking at the poster, people see the scary monster that looks like a clown named Pennywise. The antagonist looks down towards a little boy named Georgie.

Men and women with homes for sale in Weston should recognize the image from the 1986 novel of the same name. The clown is calling out to the child from the sewers in the small town of Derry, Maine. “It” then makes promises to Georgie that he will float down in the sewers, not unlike the balloon that is promised to the child. As long as a person gets close enough to “It,” the clown has the power to become any creature that will bring terror to the individuals that are being haunted.

While the movie looks like it may scare thousands of men and women with Weston homes for sale, it will not hold a candle to Stephen King’s The Shining. 1980’s work of art combines the greatest the industry ever offered: Stanley Kubrik directing Jack Nicholson as the psychopath in Stephen King’s 1977 best-selling novel. Supposedly, the film’s title was inspired by John Lennon’s “Instant Karma,” and the chorus “We all shine on.” The lead character is Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson in his first major role after his award-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The epic film takes place in the stunning scenic views of the Colorado Rockies. Jack is a writer who is hired as the caretaker for three months of a huge and isolated Colorado mountain resort hotel, the Overlook. What he didn’t realize was that the stylish resort was possessed. Jack is joined by his wife, Wendy, played by Shelley Duvall, easily recognized as Olive Oil. She is reading The Catcher in the Rye when the audience is introduced to their son, Danny. The seven-year-old boy acquires “the Shining,” the ability to connect to the deceased, a sixth sense. He talks to Tony, his imaginary friend described as the little boy that lives in his mouth. Danny gets a dangerous feeling of the hotel’s murderous forces and senses something evil about the resort before they arrive.

Danny methodically repeats and writes “Red Rum” on a mirror. The reflection displays the word backward, equating “Murder.” Now obscenely evil, Jack chases Danny with a blood-stained ax, pronouncing the eternal line, “Heeere’s Johnny!” In the climactic conclusion, viewers learn that the hotel was built upon American Indian burial. Meanwhile, Danny and his mother manage to escape in the hotel’s Snow-cat, leaving Jack to freeze to death. The following day, an intense and memorable shot shows Jack’s frozen face and body covered with ice and snow. Over a quarter century later, Hollywood is yet to make a film as terrifying as Kubrik’s masterpiece. If you like scary flicks, The Shining should be in your Weston luxury home. You can also watch this video of Stephen King relaying his feelings on Kubrik’s work.
